How I Feel about the Super Bowl LVII Ads

It is that time of year once again!

Yes! This past Sunday, February 12th, was the Super Bowl! However, I am not excited about the football part. What was I the most excited for? Two things:

  1. Rihanna’s Halftime Performance

  2. THE ADS!!

I was getting super excited to watch the Super Bowl ads this year. It’s been a couple years since I watched the Super Bowl ads with intent to write about my favorite ones. (Feel free to read the last time I watched the ads with intent to write about them in my previous blog post!)

Overall, I had some super mixed reactions to this year’s group of ads. I laughed, I almost cried, I cringed, and I was confused at some parts. For some ads, I even said some things along the lines of, “Okaaay, who got high and wrote this commercial?”

Here are my top 3 favorte ads from Super Bowl LVII:

  1. “Forever": The Farmer’s Dog Super Bowl Commercial (Extended Cut)

“I’ll always take care of you,” says the little girl to her puppy. We then see scenes of both the puppy and girl grow up into full adulthood.

Utilizing the emotions (the pathos appeal) to show that The Farmer’s Dog food is the choice for you because “Nothing matters more than more years together” as the final tagline states. We go on this journey and are reminded of we ourselves felt or in my case we imagine how it must feel to have a pet dog for that long and making the right choices to have as many years as possible with your dog.

And that right choice is The Farmer’s Dog.

It is a beautiful commercial that celebrates the feeling of having so many years with a special family pet.

2. “Jack’s New Angle” -Doritos

Jack Harlow, Missy Elliot, and Elton John star in this Doritos ad. In this ad, we see Jack Harlow looking for a new angle and he ends up quitting his rap career for a career with the instrument known as the triangle. He gets the inspiration for his new career pathway from everyone’s favorite triangular chip, Doritos. Harlow is now responsible for a boom in “triangle fever” and you see the effects of triangle fever including a new scent and the “Triangle Player of Year” award going to Elton John.

It’s funny to think of this whole story of Jack Harlow creating the triangle craze and losing to Elton John in the end. The association of Doritos is what is really important here. Associating the triangle shape and Jack Harlow is sure to grab the attention of consumers and next time these consumers want chips, they are sure to go for everyone’s favorite traingular chip, Doritos.

3. Who’s in the Fridge – Hellmann’s US

This ad was on the shorter end, but still HILARIOUS.

Jon Hamm and Brie Larson find themselves stuck in a Fridge filled with leftovers and … a Giant Jar of Hellmann’s? Suddenly, Pete Davidson opens the fridge and says he’s going to eat them. Davidson then makes a delicious looking ham and brie panini (Get it? [Jon} Ham[m] and Brie [Larson]? It’s so funny.)

The clever wordplay of Hamm and Larson’s names and Pete Davidson make this ad very humorous. Now consumers will always have this humorous story in their head from Super Bowl Sunday and will remeber to buy Hellmann’s Mayonnaise for their next sandwich.

BUT LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT REALLY MATTERED…

Let’s talk about the Super Bowl ad that was not necessarily a Super Bowl ad. During the halftime performance, Rihanna took the time to literally pause her perfomance to touch up her makeup using Fenty products.

This. was. genius.

A simple pause to use a Fenty palette in her performance was such a fire advertising move. You would not nomally see this during a Super Bowl halftime performance, but we did. An icon in music performing some of her greatest hits pausing to touch up her make up with a product from her own brand is a move no one was expecting, but it was a move that defintitely turned heads and made some promising results.

Since this move, Fenty saw a quadruple spike in Google searches.

Simple moves = money moves!
